Westboro Lions Club members believe that they are to show love to their neighbor, as God commands us, by showing their love through serving and giving. Each year the club has a fundraiser to raise money for these actions of love. In Acts 20:35 it says “In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’ ”
We live in an amazing country with an abundance of food like no other country in the world. Yet, we have people in Atchison County that face uncertainty of food from week to week. The local food pantries and Community Services do what they can to meet the needs of low income households in Atchison County, but it is always a struggle from month to month. The Westboro Lions Club has developed a passion for addressing food insecurity in Atchison County. Since July 16, the Westboro Lions Club has delivered 300 dozen eggs, 105 five-pound bags of potatoes, 75 chicken breasts, 123 loaves of bread, 60 cans of green beans, and 45 tubs of cottage cheese to these community services. The Westboro Lions Club wants to continue to provide food all year long and help fill the gap.
The club has made it their goal this year to help the families in poverty with food needs as they feel led to do so. When the club saw how Atchison County Community Services works to empower those in poverty they knew that this was the outlet that God had chosen for them this year.
The site serves food to hundreds of families and individuals each month as well as helps pay for utilities, offer life skills classes, holiday programs, back to school programs, hygiene and cleaning products, job readiness, family support, and much more. This site works hand in hand with the Tarkio Food Pantry that is located just across the street to make sure that families in need of food receive it.
