The St. Joseph South Side Lions’ eyeglass case medical kit program (MediKits) is growing! The Lions of South Side have not one, but two partners to receive the MediKits once they finish an assembly. This project started out as something South Side’s President, Lion Devon Campbell, heard being discussed at the Missouri Lions’ State Convention in 2018. The project involves taking hard sided eyeglass cases that are received from Lions’ eyeglass recycling boxes, cleaning and sterilizing them, and filling them with Band-Aids, cleaning wipes, and other assorted medical supplies that can fit in an eyeglass case. “We get a ton of cases in our boxes for recycling glasses. These are good, hard sided cases and many of them are seemingly brand new! So, when we deliver the glasses to be recycled, the Lions who take these glasses send the cases back or have us throw them away before bringing glasses to them. I hated to just throw these good cases away, so when I heard about making med kits or electronic kits out of them, I took the idea to my club and they jumped on it!” said Lion Devon. The MediKits have been met with much praise by recipients, both individuals and organizations alike. “We have handed out kits to some individuals at our annual South Side Fall Festival, though that was a couple years ago, being that the last festival was canceled. But, we have delivered one box of about 50 kits to our local AFL-CIO, who were glad to have something to hand out to the homeless. Most recently, we delivered a box of 60 to our local YWCA. They were so excited to see them and immediately told us all the different places they could use the kits!” The St. Joseph YWCA and AFL-CIO told the South Side Lions to contact them as soon as more MediKits are assembled and both organizations asked if the Lions would accept a visit to talk about how the kits are being used, as well as, any suggestions they may see for improving the kits. Lion Devon was more than willing to schedule time for them, “I said, heck yeah! Tell me when, and you can be my guest speaker. Hopefully, they will even consider joining Lions to help us serve the community better and more efficiently.” Another win for Team Lions in the tournament of service!
